Post-Sinus Lift Augmentation Care: Ensuring Successful Jawbone Restoration
If you have undergone a Sinus Lift Augmentation procedure to restore lost upper jawbone height, preparing for potential implant replacement of missing teeth, the following post-operative information is vital for a smooth recovery:
Grafted Bone Composition: The grafted bone typically comprises freeze-dried bone, artificial synthetic bone, and your own bone. You may have two post-surgical wounds: the donor site and the recipient site.
Absolutely avoid blowing your nose for the next four weeks, and possibly longer if indicated. Sniffing is acceptable, but NO BLOWING. Refrain from holding your nose while sneezing; sneeze with your mouth open instead. Do not use straws or spit, and avoid scuba diving and flying in pressurized aircraft, as they may increase sinus pressure. Decongestants like Drixoral, Dimetapp, or Sudafed can help reduce sinus pressure. Antibiotics may be prescribed; please take them as directed. Any activity that creates pressure in your nasal cavity should be avoided, including lifting heavy objects, blowing up balloons, or playing musical instruments requiring a blowing action. Smoking must be stopped.
Take the prescribed antibiotics as directed to prevent infection.
On the day of your oral surgery, avoid rinsing or spitting to prevent disturbing the blood clot, which can prolong bleeding and slow healing. Swallow saliva, even if slightly blood-tinged. After surgery, keep your mouth clean by starting salt water rinses the day following the procedure. Dissolve half a teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of warm water and gently rinse with portions of the solution for five minutes until the glass is empty. Repeat at least four to five times daily and always after eating for the next five days. Do not brush the teeth in the surgery area for 48 hours. When brushing, be very gentle, and avoid forceful expectoration.
If a specific dental treatment requires it, use the prescribed antibiotic rinse (Chlorhexidine, Periogard, Peridex) in the morning and at bedtime after routine mouth care. Avoid eating, drinking, or rinsing your mouth after using the medicated rinse. Using it more than twice a day can cause teeth staining.
Refrain from smoking for at least two weeks after surgery, or ideally, avoid smoking altogether, as it significantly increases the risk of bone graft and sinus lift failure. A Nicoderm patch can be prescribed if needed.
Avoid using partial dentures, flippers, or full dentures immediately after surgery unless instructed otherwise. If in doubt, contact our office. If you have concerns about the fit of your flipper, partial, or complete denture, refrain from wearing it until seen by your general dentist or our office.
In rare cases, unexpected post-operative healing issues may arise. If you notice any of the following, inform us immediately:
- Air or liquid flow between your mouth and nose
- Discharge of small particles of graft material from your nose
- Sinus or nasal congestion on the side of surgery
- Increased swelling in your mouth, cheek, or under your eye after 3 days
Our utmost goal is to ensure a smooth and pleasant recovery for you. By following these instructions, you can help facilitate your healing process. If you have any questions or concerns about your progress, please do not hesitate to contact us. Our office hours are suitable for inquiries, but we also offer a 24-hour answering service for after-hours contact with a doctor.
