Adhering to post-operative instructions is crucial for a successful oral cavity surgery, just like any other surgical procedure. Following these instructions diligently minimizes the occurrence of side effects.

  • Wound Care:
    • Avoid touching or sucking on the surgical wound.
    • Bite on the provided gauze pad for one hour, changing it as needed.
  • Activity and Rest:
    • Limit physical activity and go directly home after leaving the office or hospital.
  • Oral Hygiene:
    • Do not rinse your mouth for 24 hours and avoid drinking through a straw.
    • Rinse with a salt and water solution after meals starting the day after surgery.
  • Smoking:
    • Quit smoking to reduce post-operative pain and promote faster healing.
  • Swelling and Bleeding:
    • Apply ice packs to the face for 15 minutes on, then 15 minutes off for the first 6 to 8 hours to minimize swelling.
    • Slight bleeding is normal, but excessive bleeding should be addressed by applying firm pressure with gauze.
  • Pain Management:
    • Take 2 Tylenols (acetaminophen) every four hours if needed for pain relief.
    • Use warm compresses for bruising, which usually resolves on its own.
  • Diet and Fluids:
    • Stick to cold or lukewarm liquids initially and maintain a soft diet for a few days.
    • Avoid alcohol and hot drinks on the day of surgery.
  • Monitoring Symptoms:
    • Ear pain, difficulty swallowing, and jaw stiffness may occur but usually resolve on their own. Contact us if symptoms persist or worsen.
  • Contraception and Antibiotics:
    • Be aware that antibiotics may affect the effectiveness of oral contraceptives. Consider additional methods of contraception.
  • Driving and Assistance:
    • After sedation or anesthesia, refrain from driving or using hazardous devices for 18 hours.
