Adhering to post-operative instructions is crucial for a successful oral cavity surgery, just like any other surgical procedure. Following these instructions diligently minimizes the occurrence of side effects.
Wound Care:
Avoid touching or sucking on the surgical wound.
Bite on the provided gauze pad for one hour, changing it as needed.
Activity and Rest:
Limit physical activity and go directly home after leaving the office or hospital.
Oral Hygiene:
Do not rinse your mouth for 24 hours and avoid drinking through a straw.
Rinse with a salt and water solution after meals starting the day after surgery.
Smoking:
Quit smoking to reduce post-operative pain and promote faster healing.
Swelling and Bleeding:
Apply ice packs to the face for 15 minutes on, then 15 minutes off for the first 6 to 8 hours to minimize swelling.
Slight bleeding is normal, but excessive bleeding should be addressed by applying firm pressure with gauze.
Pain Management:
Take 2 Tylenols (acetaminophen) every four hours if needed for pain relief.
Use warm compresses for bruising, which usually resolves on its own.
Diet and Fluids:
Stick to cold or lukewarm liquids initially and maintain a soft diet for a few days.
Avoid alcohol and hot drinks on the day of surgery.
Monitoring Symptoms:
Ear pain, difficulty swallowing, and jaw stiffness may occur but usually resolve on their own. Contact us if symptoms persist or worsen.

Be aware that antibiotics may affect the effectiveness of oral contraceptives. Consider additional methods of contraception.
